Karbi Declared Official Language in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong
In a landmark move to preserve indigenous identity and promote linguistic inclusivity, the Government of Assam has officially declared Karbi as an administrative language in the districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, alongside English. The historic announcement was made on April 19, following a two-day visit by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to the region.
Tuliram Ronghang, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), expressed heartfelt gratitude to the state government and the Chief Minister, calling it a “forward-thinking and culturally empowering” decision.
The declaration was met with widespread celebration across the region. Community leaders, educators, and cultural organizations welcomed the decision, viewing it as long-overdue recognition of the linguistic rights of the Karbi people. Many hailed it as a significant step toward preserving the region’s cultural heritage.
“This move reaffirms our identity and instills pride in the younger generation,” said a local educator. “Recognizing Karbi as an official language will deepen cultural awareness and support educational growth in our community.”
The Assam government has outlined plans for a phased implementation of Karbi in official communication, administration, and education. Training programs for government staff and the development of language resources are already underway to ensure a smooth transition.
This decision follows growing calls from indigenous communities for greater protection and promotion of their native languages—an essential part of Assam’s diverse cultural fabric.
With Karbi now granted official status, the people of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong look ahead to a future where their language plays a central role in governance, education, and daily life.
