Tipra Motha Founder Pradyot Debbarma Considers Legal Action to Safeguard Council Autonomy

Tipra Motha founder and Tripura royal scion, Pradyot Debbarma has sharply criticized the State Election Commission for failing to conduct the long-overdue Village Council elections in Tripura’s tribal autonomous regions and is understood to be looking at filing a PIL in the Supreme Court after consulting legal experts.

“It’s not just about a government order, the High Court has directed elections, yet nothing has been done,” a visibly upset Debbarma said adding that during his upcoming Delhi visit he will discuss the issue with legal experts and before filing a public interest ligation (PIL) in the apex court.

Debbarma underscored that the lack of elected Village Councils has left tribal communities without effective grassroots representation and said, “Our people are suffering without proper grassroots representation. We need to serve them justice”.

While reaffirming Tipra Motha’s readiness to work within broader political alliances, Debbarma made it clear that he would not compromise on issues central to the rights and welfare of indigenous communities.

He stressed that participation in any alliance should not be mistaken for silence on core demands. “I cannot remain silent while my people continue to be denied their democratic rights,” he said.
