NSCN-IM Asserts Unity Amid Leadership Crisis Following Ikato Swu’s Exit
NSCN-IM leader Thuingaleng Muivah chaired a high-level meeting at his residence in Dimapur today, aiming to send a strong message of unity within the group, despite the recent exit of senior leader Ikato Swu from the organization’s headquarters in Camp Hebron.
The meeting was attended by six senior NSCN-IM leaders, including VS Atem, Anthony Simray, R.H. Raising, and Tongmeth Wangmao. According to sources, the gathering discussed whether to convene a joint council or general body meeting to address key issues, notably Ikato’s departure to Myanmar.
Observers familiar with the NSCN-IM noted that Ikato had previously raised concerns about internal differences during a meeting in Barapani in 2023. It remains unclear whether the group’s collective leadership took those concerns seriously or made efforts to address them.
Sources also indicated that some senior leaders are in favor of restructuring the group’s civil and military wings, although this information could not be independently verified.
Ikato Swu, the son of NSCN-IM co-founder Isak Chishi Swu, reportedly left for Myanmar about a week ago, accompanied by around 25 associates, including close family members. His departure has sparked intense speculation, particularly after he made strong allegations against the NSCN-IM leadership.
In a public statement, Ikato accused the leadership of widespread corruption, claiming that positions within the organization could be bought. He also criticized the Indian government, alleging that the 28-year-long ceasefire had demoralized and corrupted the group’s members.
This development marks the most significant internal crisis for the NSCN-IM since its split in 1988. It remains to be seen whether the leadership will convene a general body meeting to address the growing unrest and clarify the group’s stance moving forward.
