Pope Francis, 88, Dies in the Vatican

Pope Francis Passes Away at 88; A Legacy of Faith, Reform, and Compassion

Pope Francis, the beloved leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away on Monday morning at the age of 88.

The news was officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo. “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,” Farrell said.

Just a day earlier, Pope Francis had made a surprise appearance on Easter Sunday, greeting over 35,000 faithful from his popemobile in St. Peter’s Square. It was his most public outing since recovering from a serious bout of double pneumonia. While he did not preside over Easter Mass — a duty that was undertaken by Cardinal Angelo Comastri — the Pope delighted the crowd by riding through the square, blessing infants, and waving to pilgrims who chanted, “Viva il Papa!” and “Bravo!”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 as the first pope from the Americas and the first Latin American to lead the Catholic Church. Elected at the age of 76 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Francis quickly became a transformative figure.

During his 12-year papacy, he was known for his humility, progressive reforms, and efforts to modernize the Church. He restructured the Vatican bureaucracy, authored four major doctrinal texts, and traveled to more than 65 countries across 47 foreign trips. Under his leadership, over 900 individuals were canonized as saints.

Pope Francis also made notable strides toward inclusivity, allowing priests to bless same-sex couples on a case-by-case basis and appointing women to senior roles within the Vatican — a historic first.

In recent years, the Pope faced increasing health challenges, including frequent hospitalizations that sparked concern around the world. Despite this, he remained active and engaged in his duties until the end.

As the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion Catholics, Pope Francis leaves behind a powerful legacy — one of compassion, reform, and a commitment to bridging the gap between tradition and the modern world.
